What's in a name?

Yagarrajalajalan Nagula Buru

The project is proudly named ‘Yagarrajalajalan Nagula Buru’ , which means ‘We all care for Saltwater Country’ in Yawuru.

The project was named after project staff formally introduced the project to the Yawuru Prescribed Body Corporate (PBC) who represent Yawuru Native Title holders, with input from the Mabu Yawuru Ngan-ga Language Centre.

Along with PBC endorsement, the project name builds identity, trust, and familiarity in the project within the community, and facilitates a broader respect and understanding of Yawuru people, language, and culture.

In addition, the project name highlights important aspects of shared values and co-design that underpin the project objectives.

We are grateful for support from WA Govt. Dept. of Jobs, Tourism, Science & Innovation as well as the Dept. of Biodiversity, Conservation, & Attractions and Rio Tinto.
